Lahore (TNI) – In the inquiry report of Lahore Police, SP City Bilal and SHO Bhati Zain were declared accused of torturing the husband of a woman who died after falling into a sewer line.  This inquiry report was prepared by an inquiry committee comprising Additional IG Imran Mehmood, DIG Nasir Aziz Virk and DIG Imran Kishor.  The report said that the SP and SHO took the woman’s husband Ghulam Murtaza to Bhati police station on the spot. Instead of questioning other relatives who came with Ghulam Murtaza, they immediately called the father of the deceased girl.

According to the report, the accused police officers also detained a relative, Tanveer, who came with Ghulam Murtaza, in the police station. Both police officers continued to torture Ghulam Murtaza in the SHO’s room. Evidence was also obtained from the video of the camera installed in the SHO’s room. Ghulam Murtaza was kept in illegal detention for 5 and a half hours.

Ghulam Murtaza gave a statement to the inquiry team that the police officers kept pressuring him to accept the charge of killing his wife and daughter. The accused police officers stated that they were told by rescue and other agencies that it was not possible for a woman to drown here, so they took Ghulam Murtaza to the police station out of suspicion.

According to the inquiry report, both police officers mishandled the incident in an unprofessional manner, therefore, departmental action is recommended against both police officers.

This inquiry report has been submitted to the IG Punjab, which will be presented to the Chief Minister.
